Mountain Biking in Turangi

Mountain Biking in Turangi

Tongariro River Trail

The Tongariro River Trail is perfect for beginners, and takes you on a scenic loop along both sides of the Tongariro River in Turangi. You will see beautiful native bush, and the stunning clear waters of the Tongariro River.

This trail is great for families, and you can break your journey and enjoy a picnic at the Tongariro National Trout Centre. The 15km trail will typically take between 1 and 2 hours depending on your experience.

Getting There

The trails begins at the carpark next to the Tongariro River Bridge, where you can park your car.

Tree Trunk Gorge

This trail offers stream and river crossings, rocks and beautiful Beech forest riding. Starting from the northern end, you will begin with a challenging climb before easing to beautiful river fords and wooden bridges as you ride up the river. The track is best enjoyed in warmer weather, as the river crossings can be cold in winter, and is recommended for beginner to intermediate riders.

You should allow up 2 - 3 hours, and you will be able to check out the Pillars of Hercules along the way.

Getting there

The trail is located in the Kaimanawa Forest Park, just 15 drive south of Turangi. Car parking is available at the northern end, at the Pillars of Hercules, and also at the southern end.

Guided Tours and Shuttles

The Tongariro River Trail and Tree Trunk Gorge tracks are not far from Turangi and Parklands Motor Lodge. If you do not have your own transport or bike, or are just a beginner then there are guided tours and shuttles available which will provide Bikes, Helmets, Transport, Water and Lunch.
