Autumn Fly Fishing In Turangi - A Travelers Guide

Autumn fly fishing in Turangi ParklandsTrout fishing in Turangi is magic, it's just that simple!

Touted as the Trout Fly Fishing capital in the world, Turangi offers a unique experience for the beginner, or a seasoned fisherman, young or old. Visit our feisty Tongariro rivers and fight your own brown or rainbow trout during their annual migration, or test your skills in the smaller local wild streams where the fishing is more challenging. And then there are our local lakes...our glorious clear beautiful lakes are surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Lake Taupo is only minutes away from Parklands Motel and is an international trout fishing hot spot.

From May through to October the fish are in the rivers spawning, so when the conditions are right, guaranteed you will be nursing tired arms as a result of the day's catch. These winter spawning runs have made the region famous for fly fishing, and people come from all over the world to try our amazing trout fishing. During the winter months, the best runs occur after some rain, just as the rivers start to recede. You'll need to have good technique as it requires heavier tackle and plenty of determination. Don't let this put you off though once you get the drift right, you won't have any problem reeling them in.

For faster fishing, choose long warm evenings and multiple hatches during December and January. From December through to February the trout are filling themselves on the bounties of summer and gaining plenty of weight. During these warmer months, when it's possible to fish in a t-shirt and wet-wading, it's not uncommon to catch a rainbow or brown trout over 8 pounds.

Whether you're an experienced trout fisherman or a novice wanting to try the sport for the first time, it can be a great idea to take a fly fishing guide with you. Our local fly fishing guides know all the best spots, can advise you on the right tackle to use, how to improve your technique, and can arrange all transport if needed.
